The Super Star of South Indian Cinema was born on 12th Dec 1949. His parents are Shri. Nanoji Rao Gaekward and Shrimathi. Ramboi. He has two brothers and one sister namely Shri. Satyanarayan Rao, Shri Nageshwara Rao and Shrimathi Aswathamma. The Cine popular Rajnikanth was christened by their parents as Shivaji Rao Gaekward and was called as Shivaji before he entered the cine media. Rajinikanth studied in Ramakrishna Mission School in Bangalore. He was a bright student in childhood but reportedly could not finish his schooling due to family circumstances. As grown up Rajinikanth joined a Bus Transport in Bangalore and worked as a Conductor. He was popular on the buses in those days itself for his swift action and style manners, especially among youngsters. He used to act in dramas with his childhood friends and developed a flair for acting as a profession.

Remember Woodlands Drive-In Restaurant? That leafy old Chennai hangout will be thrown open to public once again on Wednesday, but in a different avatar. A botanical garden will now replace the much-loved restaurant at the same location.Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, whose government in 1989 had set in motion the closure of the restaurant, is scheduled to inaugurate the new Semmozhi Poonga on Wednesday evening. The garden has been christened such to commemorate the Classical Tamil Conference, which was held earlier this year.The garden will feature eight sub-gardens displaying flora of different varieties, such as a tree court, mural walk and bonsai, herbal and exotic gardens. Also on display will be a butterfly garden and a golden garden that would feature plants that flower in different shades of gold. There is also an artificial duck pond.Though the gardens would open on Wednesday it could take at least a year before it can be viewed in its full intended glory. "Most of the plants here are new. This is a start. But we can assure you it will look more beautiful as time passes because the plants would have grown", the park's horticulture officer, G Vijayaram, told Express.The garden itself still does not have the approval of the vast number of those who adored the old drive-in restaurant that served its last coffee on April 12, 2008.

In a neat diplomatic compromise, Prince Charles, representing Queen Elizabeth, the head of the Commonwealth, and President Pratibha Patil did the honours at the inaugural ceremony, amid thunderous cheers from the capacity 60,000 crowd.

'I have much pleasure in declaring the 19th Commonwealth Games open', the Prince said reading out a message from the British monarch.

This was followed by the address of President Patil, who concluded by saying ' the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi are now open. Let the Games begin', signalling the formal commencement of the sporting extravaganza.

Many years later when I moved to Madras, I took up learning Dikshitar kritis from TL Venkatarama Iyer. What a great man. A lawyer, a judge and a musicologist. His only hobby was music. Unlike other Judges, he never had any time for clubs or parties. All his free time was spent in music. 

I would go to his house in the evenings and learn from him. There were many days, when he would come to my house from the Court directly and teach me. I lived in Mambalam at that time. 

He would teach me the outline of the Dikshitar kriti. He would only teach me one or two sangatis that were of the Ambi Dikshitar pATAntharam. If I wanted to add any sangatis, I was free to. He would tell me to polish them for the stage.

At this time, his junior in law, SandhyAvandanam Srinivasa Rao was also learning from him.

Later B Rajam Iyer and Kalpagam Swaminathan also learnt from him. Later he moved to Delhi as Judge of the Supreme Court. Whenever I went there, I learnt from him. Once during such a visit, he took me to Rashtrapati Bhawan where I met Babu Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India. I sang cEta shrI bAlakriShnam. He was moved. He said that he had not been aware of the existence of such a song. 

A few years later, I was one day asked to come to the Raj Bhawan, Madras. Dr Rajendra Prasad had come to Tirupati to attend a convocation and on his way back to Delhi, spending an evening at Raj Bhawan. It was JanmAShTami Day. So he had asked if TLV's disciple could come and sing cEta shrI again. I sang the song again to his great satisfaction." 

At this point, Sri Iswaran, Pattammal's husband walks in. Conversation becomes general. I take my leave after sometime. 

Later that evening, I get a call from Nithyasree. " Patti says she forgot to tell you two very important things. Please call her." 

So I did and sure enough there was DKP at the other end.

" There are two things I want to tell you, which you must add in your article.

First, I cannot express my wonder at my good fortune at having learnt a few songs from a descendant of Muttuswami Dikshitar himself. I consider it to be a great stroke of luck. At that time it was not easy for a lady of our community to take to performing on stage and I consider this a result of some good deed in a previous birth. 

Second, I did not tell you the circumstances of TLV's passing away. I was nominated for the Sangita Kalanidhi in 1970. Great was the joy of TLV. But he was in frail health and could not make it to the Sadas. Directly after the ceremony, I drove to his residence with the award. I was met by his wife, who said that his health had taken a turn for the worse and that he was waiting to see me. I went in and showed him the award. He burst into tears. I was very emotional too. He kept saying that his daughter had got the Sangita Kalanidhi. 

That very night he was shifted to hospital. He died by the next day. It was as if he had held on only to see me get the award."

As I put the receiver down, my heart is full of some unexplainable emotion. What a great art form is this, which has produced the likes of Ambi Dikshitar, TL Venkatarama Iyer and finally a lady like DKP, who despite her fame, her knowledge and her achievements, is so humble, still willing to readily meet a nosey youngster, spend time with him and patiently answer all his questions.

NEW TERMINAL T3 OPENED TODAY AT NEWDELHI

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the inside terminal 3 of Delhi International airport.

The IGI airport became the world's fifth largest airport after its inauguration.

The new terminal building can provide to 34 million passengers annually and has 95 immigration counters.

It also promises to delineate a new air travel in India and boasts of in-line baggage handling system with capacity to handle 12,800 bags per hour.

It has 92 moving walkways and 78 aerobridges connecting the boarding area directly to the aircraft. The new world-class hub is designed to support the gigantic Airbus A380, one of the world's largest commercial planes.

India will for the first time host the Commonwealth Games, a sporting event that will bring athletes from 71 former British colonies to the capital. Now Delhi is preparing itself for this great event and the new terminal 3 in IGI is only one step forward to it.

According to one aviation experts, though many of India's more than 124 airports are in need of upgrades, but that New Delhi's new terminal could become the model.

"Terminal 3 in New Delhi is a visible symbol of the new India and our new economy. It's also a game-changing moment for India's business world. It's a momentous occasion for building confidence in our country," told Kapil Kaul, the head of the Asian Pacific Aviation to Hindustan times.

Thousands of flights have been cancelled at Germany's main airports on the first day of a four-day strike by Lufthansa pilots.
Attempts at last-minute negotiations between the pilots' union and Lufthansa management, mediated by the government, failed at the weekend.
The dispute centres on the transfer of jobs to foreign subsidiaries of Lufthansa to cut costs.
The head of media relations at Lufthansa is Andreas Bartels.
